John Lumpkin
John Lumpkin II is a boundary-pushing artist, producer, and educator whose music emerges at the intersection of modern jazz, gospel, and world music, rooted in the spiritual and rhythmic legacy of his Gullah Geechee heritage. His work stretches beyond style into storytelling, using the drum set as a lead voice that carries ancestry, faith, and community into the present.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, John sharpened his craft by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and a Master’s degree from Florida State University. His artistry was further shaped by elite programs such as the Ravinia Steans Music Institute and Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, where he refined his sound and deepened his commitment to mentorship and innovation.
Over the course of his career, John has moved seamlessly between bandstand, classroom, and global stages, with performances and educational work spanning from Japan to Switzerland. His role in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program under Wynton Marsalis at the Dr. Phillips Center and his collaborations with Beyond Music all signal a creator who sees jazz as a worldwide language and a vehicle for collaboration.
In Jacksonville and across the Southeast, John is a sought-after producer for artists, presenters, and institutions who want to build something meaningful with jazz at the center. Through his nonprofits, the Jazz Discovery Series and the John Lumpkin Institute, he curates concerts, masterclasses, and curricula that give emerging musicians access to high-level mentorship and give communities access to transformative musical experiences. Working with John means stepping into a space where heritage is honored, innovation is welcomed, and the music is always in service of something larger than the gig.
John’s unique ability to marry deep-pocket drumming, melodic sensitivity, and spiritually grounded concepts offers audiences and collaborators a creative experience that feels both elevated and human. In a time when jazz is constantly evolving, John Lumpkin II is a vital voice, an artist, mentor, and architect of sound who invites others to build with him. As he says, “Put it all into the music, so that way the music now has life.”
