
John A. Lumpkin II
From Grammy-nominated artists and producers to the next generation of jazz innovators, John Lumpkin has established himself as one of the leading pillars of the Southeast’s music scene. His diverse musical endeavors span world music, jazz, and gospel, drawing inspiration from legendary drummers like Elvin Jones, Chris "Daddy" Dave, and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson.

As a respected producer, educator, mentor, and artist, John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and a Master’s degree from Florida State University. He has also enhanced his expertise through participation in the prestigious Ravinia Steans Music Institute and the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program.

With a career that stretches from Japan to Switzerland, Mr. Lumpkin has traveled the world, sharing his passion as both an artist and educator. His involvement in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program under the guidance of Wynton Marsalis at the Dr. Phillips Fine Arts Center in Orlando exemplifies his dedication. He also played a vital role in the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra and contributed to Beyond Music, a visionary platform co-founded by Tina Turner that empowers global artistic collaboration.

Honoring his Gullah Geechee roots in Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Lumpkin is devoted to fostering community engagement through the power of music. He founded two nonprofit organizations: the Jazz Discovery Series and the John Lumpkin Institute, reflecting his commitment to uplifting others. As a proud member of the Leadership Jacksonville 2025 class, he channels his unwavering ambition into making a meaningful difference through his musical talents, always guided by his faith.
